Detective Lieutenant Mark McPherson (Dana Andrews) is on the case in the killing of a young, beautiful, highly successful advertising executive, Laura Hunt (Gene Tierney), found dead on her apartment floor. Jealousy, passion and blackmail surround the investigation, as the detective finds himself falling in love with the woman whose murder he's investigating. Adapted from blacklisted author Vera Caspary's novel by blacklisted screenwriter Ring Lardner Jr. (uncredited for his work), this twisty noir was nominated for five Oscars, winning Best Cinematography – Black-and-White.
