Club Fair 4:30-6:00pm
Follow the half-century story of America's civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam, whose groundbreaking Bowling Alone research into America's decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy's present crisis.
Flanked by influential fans and scholars — from Hillary Clinton, Pete Buttigieg, and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to Eddie Glaude Jr., Raj Chetty, and Priya Parker — as well as inspiring groups building community in neighborhoods across the country, join Bob as he explores three urgent civic questions: What makes democracy work? Why is American democracy in crisis? And, most importantly… What can we do about it?
Transition Town Iowa City is a grassroots community group living into positive visions of community resilience as we transition to a post-carbon world. Formed in 2023 and modeled on the Transition Network model, initial Transition Town IC projects include IC Repair, a quarterly Repair Cafe, and From What is…To What If, a winter discussion group to move from angst to positive and practical action. Transition Town Iowa City believes that social capital and human connections (through clubs, for example!) helps create more resilient communities.
Iowa City Foreign Relations Council (ICFRC) is an independent, non-partisan organization that hosts speaker programs, community forums, and educational experiences to help Iowans better understand international issues and foster global engagement.
