In late June 2021, renowned musician and composer John Rapson gathered with a talented group of musicians to record a new suite entitled, “Esteban & The Children of the Sun.” Over four days, in an improvised basement studio space in the home of his daughter, Hannah, Rapson and his colleagues laid down fourteen tracks that tell the story of the perilous and historic travels of Esteban, the first African to journey across North America. It was, in its approach to ensemble and in its commitment to spotlighting forgotten figures and traditions, a signature Rapson project. It was also his last. On October 3, 2021, a little more than two months after John Rapson passed away, those same musicians gathered to debut “Esteban & The Children of the Sun” before a full house at Iowa City’s Englert Theater. It was a once-in-a-lifetime night, an electric performance that paid tribute to, and celebrated the life and work of, both its subject and its composer. Now, for the first time anywhere, FilmScene presents the story of that night, that music, and that feeling: “Esteban & The Children of the Sun – 10.3.21”
