ORLANDO

A Refocus Film Festival Classics Selection

Adapted loosely from the sensational novel by Virginia Woolf, Orlando tells the story of a poet who effortlessly shapeshifts through occupations, social classes, and genders. Told over the course of 400 years in a gorgeous visual rendering directed by Sally Potter, we witness the titular Orlando, portrayed by Tilda Swinton at her most bewitching, weave between the threads of time, gaining and losing love as easily as they shed one sexual body to assume another. Orlando is unwilling to compromise, reluctant to inhabit a single skin for the entirety of their existence, desperate to find herself without sacrificing the fluidity that defines his experience. A radical exploration of the fluidity of gender and sexuality, Orlando is arguably one of the most essential queer films of the last fifty years.
