Dialogue with author Scott Heim
In the summer of 1981, two eight year old boys play on the same little league baseball team in a small Kansas town. One day after a game, one blacks out after getting caught in a rainstorm, and five hours later finds himself sitting in his basement with no memory of what happened. Over the years, the event weighs heavily on his mind, and he becomes convinced that he was kidnapped by aliens. During the same summer, the other boy develops a powerful crush on their little league coach and is sexually abused. In their teen years, while one develops an escapist belief in the supernatural, the other becomes recklessly promiscuous and anti-social.
In this powerful drama adapted from Scott Heim’s novel of the same name, independent filmmaker Gregg Araki (Nowhere) directs a devastating coming-of-age epic—not without his signature comedic and science fiction elements—for the first time not originating from one of his own screenplays.
