Provocateur Radu Jude (Kontinental '25) gives his comically dark take on the Octave Mirbeau novel of the same name—notably adapted by Luis Buñuel and Jean Renoir among others. This examination of class and immigration follows Gianina (Ana Dumitrascu), a young Romanian immigrant living in France who works for a French family and joins a theatre company who themselves are adapting The Diary of a Chambermaid for the stage. As she cares for the son of the bourgeois Bordeaux family who employ her, she is forced to fight for travel home to visit her own ailing daughter at Christmastime.
