ASHES

Eight years after their mother left for Madrid to chase a better future for her family, Lucila and her younger brother leave Mexico to reunite with her and make their family whole again. When they finally arrive, the bitter, suffocating reality that awaits them proves far harsher than Lucila had imagined, but she is determined to make the most of this fragile new life. Adapted from the 2022 novel Eating Ashes by Brenda Navarro (2023 University of Iowa International Writing Program alum) Diego Luna (Y tu mamá también) directs this delicate exploration of familial relationships, migrant struggles, class dynamics, and grief with a gentle touch.
