An abstract experimental reinterpretation of Dracula, this film fuses analog and digital decay-from Super 8 to 35mm-into a glitch-infused vision that transforms the novel's ghotic eroticism into a haunting new audiovisual experience.

This is an experimental horror film constructed entirely from digital and analog footage of old vampire movies. Using visual material from dozens of Dracula adaptations—including 35mm and Super 8 reels—director Péter Lichter transformed the raw elements through various forms of material decay and distortion, such as film rot, dyeing, glitch effects, digital manipulation, reprinting, and re-filming. The resulting abstract flow of images offers a unique, sensuous reinterpretation of Bram Stoker’s classic novel, amplifying its gothic eroticism and haunting aesthetic. Evoking the visual language of silent cinema, The Thing in the Coffin unfolds its story through intertitles, accompanied by an original score and sound design by Bence Kovács-Vajda and additional music by Anna Bölöni.
