Jean Arthur: Hollywood Foghorn
"As warm and refreshing a ray of sunshine as we've had in a very late Spring."—Bosley Crowther, The New York Times
Due to a housing shortage in Washington, D.C., during World War II, Connie Milligan (Jean Arthur) agrees to rent part of her apartment to wealthy retiree Benjamin Dingle (Charles Coburn) and soldier Joe Carter (Joel McCrea). She soon starts to forget her milquetoast fiance and fall for Joe. When Dingle notices their mutual interest, he attempts to play matchmaker—throwing off Connie's meticulous schedule and sowing chaos into their cramped quarters. This hijink-heavy screwball comedy earned Charles Coburn his only Oscar win and Jean Arthur her only nomination.
