The Wolf House (La Casa Lobo) (2018)

Directed by Joaquín Cociña & Cristóbal León

Combining stop-motion techniques, painting and photography, this exquisitely handcrafted animation feature tells the story of a girl who escapes a cult colony of religious fanatics during Chile’s darkest years under Pinochet.

"How does one go about describing the stomach-churning terrors of Joaquín Cociña and Cristóbal León’s The Wolf House? Its visual landscape is unlike any I’ve experienced, and though everything about it is aggressively repellant, it still managed to hold me in a constant state of gobsmacked awe." - Matt Fagerholm, RogerEbert.com

"From that technical viewpoint, The Wolf House is undeniably impressive. Anyone who wants to see the potential for materials and format in animation needs to see how seamlessly the images flip between two- and three-dimensional, between large-scale props and illustrations that burst through the frames of the wall, spill into the floor, or break into abstractions." - Richard Whittaker, Austin Chronicle

"A 'brilliant nightmare' painstakingly captured through stop-motion animation, The Wolf House acts as social commentary, history lesson, and a master class in unconventional storytelling." - Horror 101 with Dr. AC

Maria, a young woman finds refuge in a house in the south of Chile after escaping from a sect of German religious fanatics. She is welcomed into the home by two pigs, the only inhabitants of the place. Like in a dream, the universe of the house reacts to Maria’s feelings. The animals transform slowly into humans and the house becomes a nightmarish world. Inspired by the actual case of Colonia Dignidad, masquerades as an animated fairy tale produced by the leader of the sect in order to indoctrinate its followers.
