Conan the Barbarian (1982)
Directed by John Milius (Dillinger)
Thief, warrior, gladiator, king. He conquered an empire to avenge his father's death...
"Conan the Barbarian wasn't only a financial success - the film also made Arnold Schwarzenegger a bankable star." - Paul M. Sammon, Conan: The Phenomenon
"Throats are slit, giant snakes are stabbed, heads are chopped off and blood flows rather freely in the film but despite all of the sensationalist elements the movie never feels too gratuitous or over the top." - Ian Jane, Rock! Shock! Pop!
"Conan the Barbarian is, in fact, a very nearly perfect visualization of the Conan legend, of Robert E. Howard's tale of a superman who lived beyond the mists of time, when people were so pure, straightforward, and simple that a 1930s pulp magazine writer could write about them at one cent a word and not have to pause to puzzle out their motivations." - Roger Ebert
Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in the original action-packed epic adventure Conan the Barbarian. Following his parents' savage murder, young Conan (Schwarzenegger) is captured by the cold-blooded Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones) and spends the next 15 years in agony, first chained to the Wheel of Pain and then enslaved as a pit fighter. Rather than allowing this brutal fate to conquer him, Conan builds an incomparable body and an indomitable spirit - both of which he needs when he suddenly finds himself a free man. Aided by his companions Subotai the Mongol (Gerry Lopez) and Valeria, Queen of Thieves (Sandahl Bergman), Conan sets out to solve the 'riddle of steel', seize ultimate power and, finally take revenge on the warlord who killed his family.
Winner - Golden Globes 1983: New Star of the Year in a Motion Picture - Sandahl Bergman
