75th Anniversary Screening

"Undeniably a film noir, and rightly regarded as one of the genre's best."—Keith Phipps, The Dissolve

"The most delicate and nuanced of film noirs, graced with a reflective lyricism that almost lifts it out of the genre."—Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader

Robert Mitchum and Kirk Douglas star in this classic film noir often cited as the best of the genre about a man who believes he has created a new life for himself until a deadly foe returns to upend his tranquil life. Jeff Bailey (Mitchum) runs a gas station in an idyllic mountain town and is engaged to Ann (Virginia Huston). He used to be a private detective, who was hired by mobster Whit Sterling (Douglas) to find Sterling's girlfriend, Kathie Moffett (Jane Greer). But when Bailey found Moffett, she seduced him into double-crossing Sterling. Now Sterling has returned with another job for Bailey. And Bailey knows two things: He cannot refuse the job, and it can only end in murder. But both men again underestimate the beautiful Moffett's ruthless, deadly guile.
