Celebrate Silent Movie Day with FilmScene with a new restoration of The Spanish Dancer
After dancing for dashing nobleman Don Caesar de Bazan (Antonio Moreno), beautiful gypsy Maritana, (Pola Negri) reads his cards and foretells poverty, a wedding with a masked bride, prison, and a duel. All that — and more — ensue, as the would-be lovers brave obstacles that include a runaway horse, the lecherous king of Spain, and a firing squad. With spirited direction by Herbert Brenon, glowing cinematography by James Wong Howe, and a stellar cast that includes Wallace Beery and Adolph Menjou, The Spanish Dancer is thrilling and absolutely delightful. Bill Ware incorporated Romani themes, jazz, and period instruments to create a modern score that pays homage to the film’s setting and matches its delirious breakneck pace.
