FilmScene Animation Camp was awarded Best Summer Camp (Best of the CRANDIC 2021)!

From LORD OF THE RINGS to CORALINE, miniature sets have been a staple in filmmaking for over 100 years! In this week-long camp, campers will learn the history of miniature making, study design, and create their own miniature set pieces, including buildings, terrain, and more! And, added to this year’s curriculum will be 3D printing. Students will have the option to work on individual or collaborative projects.
*Please note this course will use hot glue and Exacto knives.

Check out this VIDEO for more details on Miniature Construction Camp.

This advanced camp is for students entering grades 6, 7 or 8.

Up to 12 campers may register for the week-long camp. Camp will be held at FilmScene on the Ped Mall, located at 118 E. College in Iowa City.

All technology and supplies included. Each day includes stretching and snack breaks. Two snacks and individually-packed lunches from Bread Garden Market are provided.

Students will take home their miniature creations at the end of camp for use in their at-home filmmaking endeavors.

The Instructor:
This will be Jarrod DeRooi’s 8th summer teaching for FilmScene. His interest in stop motion started in his youth, his early animations and movies all filmed on his prized Sony Handycam. He is overjoyed to get to share his love for stop motion with young artists. Jarrod formerly worked for the Iowa City Community School District but now spends his time outside of camp writing, drawing and running a small organic farm.

Summer is Jarrod’s favorite time of year, and there is no place he would rather spend it than at Film Scene, working with the next generation of filmmakers!

Tuition may be paid in full at time of registration, or in two installments ($200 deposit and $225 balance). The remaining balance must be paid before your camper’s first day of camp. Please contact Angie at or 319-591-6422 to pay your balance.

Scholarships are available through the generous support of Hills Bank and Trust Company. Please complete the form at the following link to apply for a scholarship:

Camp will adhere to regular sanitation (hand washing, surface disinfectant wipes, etc) to ensure a clean environment. The FilmScene camp room will not be used for activities besides camp during the week.

FilmScene believes the health and safety of staff and guests is paramount. On site safety protocols will continually be reconfirmed or altered to align with significant changes to public health conditions. Registrants will be notified of any changes to FilmScene protocol.
