Refocus Film Festival Closing Night Event

Blank Check Presents: The Garbage Pail Kids Movie
Sunday, October 25, 7:30pm
At The Englert Theatre
Film screening and one-hour live podcast recording
Scheduled to appear: Griffin Newman and Ben Hosley

Griffin Newman and Ben Hosley from the essential film podcast Blank Check join Refocus Film Festival to revisit and celebrate one of the great big screen abominations of all time: The Garbage Pail Kids Movie—the bizarre, grotesque, anti-capitalist, anarchic, can’t-look-away adaptation of the equally polarizing trading cards series.

ABOUT BLANK CHECK
Blank Check is a podcast about filmographies; specifically those of Hollywood directors who achieved massive success early on, and thus were given a series of “blank checks” to make whatever crazy passion projects they wanted. As hosts Griffin Newman and David Sims state every episode—sometimes those checks clear, and sometimes they bounce, baby!

Since 2015, the weekly podcast has covered dozens of directors (such as: M. Night Shyamalan, The Wachowskis, Elaine May and currently Martin Scorsese.) With each director-focused miniseries, Griffin and David add to a growing repertoire of recurring jokes about, frustrations with, and appreciations for each filmmaker. Joining them alongside their producer Ben Hosley are accomplished guests that include actors, journalists, comedians, podcasters and directors.

ABOUT GARBAGE PAIL KIDS THE MOVIE
From the Cabbage Patches to the Garbage Pails, the early ‘80s were all about the Kids. And at the height of the craze came The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, a gross-out monstrosity that somehow took the wildly popular trading card sticker craze to new levels of nausea. Yet, for nearly 40 years, audiences keep returning for the nightmarish costumes and practical effects, 80s nostalgia, and inexplicable musical number. Perhaps it's time to reconsider: is this trash spectacle just plain bad or so bad it's good?

Starring MacKenzie Astin (The Facts of Life) as a perfectly nice teenager who accidentally releases the Kids from their magical trash can prison, where all smell breaks loose. Despite their personal habits — and attitude problems — Dodger soon becomes fond of the Kids. But when Messy Tessie, Foul Phil, Valerie Vomit and the whole misfit crew join his fight against thuggish bullies. Their efforts just might land them behind bars at the State Home for the Ugly!
