Freaky Tales is a stylized, anthology film set in 1987 Oakland, California, where four distinct stories of outsiders intersect against the backdrop of a mysterious green energy spreading through the city, weaving together tales of a female rap duo battling sexist rappers, a retired debt collector seeking revenge, a punk couple fighting neo-Nazis, and an NBA star harnessing supernatural powers, all connected by a strange, emerald glow and featuring a star-studded cast including Pedro Pascal, Jay Ellis, Ben Mendelsohn, Normani, and Dominique Thorne. Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half Neslon), the film is essentially a vibrant, violent, and campy tribute to the era's diverse Oakland subcultures, including punk, ska, and hip-hop, with each narrative showcasing explosive showdowns and battles against a backdrop of gritty visuals and an electrifying soundtrack.
