"A brilliant nightmare."—Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"About as perfect as a movie can be."—Marjorie Baumgarten, Austin Chronicle

"No other film has ever dramatized urban indifference so powerfully."—Pauline Kael, The New Yorker

Isolated ex-marine Travis Bickle (Robert  De Niro) applies for a job as a taxi driver, hoping that the nocturnal working pattern will alleviate the effects of his insomnia and distract him from his gnawing depression. But ferrying passengers through the seedy underbelly of night-time New York City only compounds Bickle's psychological dislocation from the world around him. His night shifts in the cab are spent resenting those he sees, while his waking daytime hours are wasted away in the gloom of adult movie theaters. After entering into a troubled relationship with a political campaigner and embarking on a fraught mission to save a teenager from the world of prostitution, Bickle's sense of place and purpose steadily warps. He withdraws into himself, hoards illegal firearms, and begins a regimen of intense physical training in preparation for a misguided vigilante assault on the evils of society.

A Neon-Noir Selection

Neon Noir
After the Hays Code was lifted and the classic noir period came to a close, neo-noir was born. A more hard edged look at seedy underworlds and femme fatales. From those movies a slick sub genre emerged, the neon noir. Typified by its rain soaked streets lit by the glow of neon signs, these films have a particular brand of cool all their own.
