50th Anniversary Presentation

Lenny (Charles Grodin) and his wife Lila (Jeannie Berlin) are on their honeymoon in Miami, but Lenny can't shake the feeling that he's made a mistake. When he runs into the young Kelly (Cybill Shepherd) on the beach—bathed in a halo of sunlight—he falls head over heels and starts to weasel his way out of his recent nuptials to chase after the college girl of his dreams. Receiving a cold reception from her father (Eddie Albert) when he arrives in Minnesota, Lenny is once again troubled at his decision making and must double down to win the newfound love of his life even if he just might never be happy. At once hilarious and soul achingly ruminative, this is Elaine May's exploration of Jewish identity with Cybill Shepherd in her second movie lighting up the screen and Charles Grodin as a sad sack for the ages. At 50 the film still feels remarkably fresh, distinct, and uniquely May.
