Opens 10/7. Showtimes TBA and generally posted Tuesday prior to film's opening date. Winner - Audience Award & U.S. Grand Jury Prize, 2016 Sundance Film Festival "A biographical drama steeped equally in grace and horror...exists to provoke a serious debate about the necessity and limitations of empathy, the morality of retaliatory violence, and the ongoing black struggle for justice and equality in this country. It earns that debate and then some." -Justin Chang, Variety "Turner deserves this treatment; he deserves a film that doesn't soften the era or apologize in any way for his anger; and he deserves a salute for making it happen." -Allison Willmore, BuzzFeed Based on a true story. Set against the antebellum South, THE BIRTH OF A NATION follows Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner, accepts an offer to use Nat's preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities -- against himself and his fellow slaves -- Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.
